A Brief History of Flagstaff
The story of Flagstaff begins long before it became the vibrant mountain community we know today. Native American peoples, including the Sinagua, Anasazi, and Cohonino tribes, inhabited this region for thousands of years, leaving behind remarkable cliff dwellings and pueblos still visible in nearby Walnut Canyon and Wupatki. The area's modern settlement traces back to the 1870s when pioneers traveling westward discovered the natural springs and abundant resources at the base of the San Francisco Peaks.
On July 4, 1876, a group of settlers from Boston celebrated America's centennial by stripping the branches from a tall ponderosa pine and raising an American flag, forever giving the settlement its distinctive name. The first permanent resident, Thomas F. McMillan, established his homestead that same year, setting in motion the community's transformation from a small wagon road outpost to a thriving frontier town.
The arrival of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in 1882 marked a turning point for Flagstaff's development. Almost overnight, the small settlement became a crucial stop along the transcontinental railroad, with trains carrying passengers and freight between Chicago and Los Angeles. The lumber industry quickly flourished, as entrepreneurs recognized the value of the vast ponderosa pine forests surrounding the town. The Riordan brothers, Michael and Timothy, founded the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company in the 1890s, bringing electricity to Flagstaff and establishing themselves as key figures in the city's economic and social development.
By 1894, Flagstaff had incorporated as a town and was chosen as the county seat of newly formed Coconino County. That same year marked another milestone when astronomer Percival Lowell established Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill, where Pluto would be discovered in 1930. The founding of Northern Arizona Normal School in 1899, which evolved into today's Northern Arizona University, cemented Flagstaff's role as Northern Arizona's educational and cultural center.
